How I Took That Shot – Kevin Day

Kevin Day took first place in Grade B in our third internal competition of the year recently. The theme was ‘Night’ and this is how he made the image:

Kevin Day - Night Competition

Last year, when I heard there was a super moon on the way, I decided to head for Ballycotton. Silver strand seemed like a good option, the night was very calm, hardly a ripple in the water. I liked how the church was lit up in the distance and the moon reflecting on the water and of course the light house played it’s part.

I took various shots with different clouds, the tide was dropping quickly, eventually I settled on this one because it had the right light and the right cloud. I entered this shot because I thought it best matched the theme of the competition.

Well done Kevin

How I Took That Shot – Finbarr O’Shea

In one of the most exciting vote counts the Group has seen in recent times, Finbarr O’Shea came from behind to win Grade A in our third internal competition of the year by a single point in the very last vote, with the beautiful image below. The theme was ‘Night’ and this is how he made it:

My picture for the night competition was the cruise ship, Celebrity Eclipse. The picture was taken in May 2010 when the ship stayed overnight at Cobh cruise terminal.

The photo was taken with a Canon 5d mk2 with a 24/70 lens at 55mm, F5.6, 1 sec, ISO 200, on a tripod.

Well done Finbarr

Night Competition Results

Grade A was a very close race indeed which saw Anthony O’Connor going into an early lead only to be pipped at the post by one single point by Finbarr O’Shea in the very final vote! Fidelma Read took third place.

Night Competition Winners

Finbarr O’Shea – Winner Grade A

Kevin Day had his second win of the year in Grade B with Trevor O’Connell and Denis O’Flynn taking second and third respectively.

James Brady took first in Grade C while Catherine Millad and RJ Mani took second and third.

The overall high scores across all three Grades were a repetition of the Grade A placings with Finbarr O’Shea, Anthony O’Connor and Fidelma Read taking the honours.

Well done to all entrants and congratulations to those who occupied the first, second and third spots in each Grade who will get 12, 10 and 8 points respectively towards this year’s Photographer of the Year competition.

Charles Lee ASINWP Visits ECCG

East Cork Camera Group was delighted to welcome nature and wildlife photographer, Charles (Charlie) Lee, ASINWP, to speak at our recent Group meeting at the Midleton Park Hotel.

fox1A man clearly with a passion for his subject, Charlie is also absolutely on top of his photography game. As he scrolled through his slideshow and passed around some prints, the approval of the audience was audible and, while we would have been more than satisfied just to see the images, he was also keen to share the background to each image including the methods he used to make the shot including his favourite shooting locations.

In May 2013 Charlie gained his Associateship from The International Society Of Nature and Wildlife Photographers and you can see his gallery of twenty images that made up his entry here.

While admitting to his reputation as the ‘bird on a stick’ photographer, Charlie is much more than that as his portfolio spans all sorts of nature and wildlife from the great to the small, on land, water and air. His stunning images of shy animals such as the fox above convey the skill, patience and knowledge of the man while Charlie is also a fine landscape and seascape photographer.

Not content with the rich pickings of regular nature and wildlife photography, Charlie also has a stunning collection of bird in flight images taken with slow shutter speeds that really catch the eye. The resulting blurred motion captured in these images and printed on museum paper lends a fine art look and feel that is really pleasing.

With the high standard of the work on show together with Charlie’s obvious eagerness to continue to push the boundaries, one feels that a Fellowship cannot be far away. Well done Charlie and thanks for sharing your photography and knowledge with us.

Roches Point Sunset – 5/4/15

Kevin Day - RP sunset-9

Ten ECCG members turned out for our latest weekly shoot, this time it was to Roches Point on Sunday 5th April last to capture the sunset.

We met at the car park below the Lighthouse, where we were welcomed by three local goats, each one happy to pose for us in the evening sunlight.

After discussing a number of options and possible vantage points, the group split with some members heading for higher ground across the fields to the east, while the remainder opted to shoot the sunset from the lighthouse grounds.

Roches Point is a location regularly visited by our group, there is always an interesting shot to be got there, whether it’s the typical view of the lighthouse from the beach, or a passing ship, or an impressive sunset which is what we were after this time, and we weren’t disappointed. Check out some of the images below or go to the website shoot gallery here.
