How I Took that Shot – Joe Keniry

19 Joe Keniry - Weather

Not only did Joe Keniry take first place in Grade B in our ‘Weather’ competition held on 7/2/17, his image was the highest scoring image across all grades, a fantastic feat. This is how he made it:

This photo was taken on the 26th October 2015 at Youghal front strand.

It was a very stormy day and high tides were predicted. As I wasn’t that busy, I took the afternoon off and went to Youghal. There was a gathering of about 20 people viewing the large waves crashing over the wall. I was taking a few shots from a distance when I noticed a young boy dodging the sea spray. I felt there was a shot there so I stayed with him and then, luckily for me but not for him, he got caught under a huge wave breaking over the wall. So I thank him for that perfect shot on that not so perfect day!

I used my Nikon D7000, 50 mm lens, 1/250 sec, F/9, ISO  400.

Well done Joe!

ECCG ‘Weather’ Competition – 07/02/2017

19 Joe Keniry - Weather

After the Christmas break it was great to get back into competition mode again. With twenty-five entries and thirty-one voters in house at the Midleton Park Hotel on Tuesday 7/2/17, there was a buzz about the room as the first internal competition of the year was about to kick off.

The theme was ‘Weather’ and, living in Ireland, there should be no problem getting shots for that competition surely? The strong entry was an affirmative answer to that question, and as the entries were projected, the voting got under way.

An hour later, the number crunching got under way and it was apparent immediately that there would be several close contests within the Grades. This is how the final numbers fell:

scores

Grade A saw current Photographer of the Year, Zane Llewellyn take first place while Kevin Day and Mervyn Daly took second and third.

Joe Keniry took top spot in Grade B with the image above which was also the highest scoring image across all Grades with 677points. He was followed in Grade B by Keith Johnson and new member Remigiusz Boron.

Grade C saw another new member, Sonja Eisenberg, take first place with Andrew Foley and Miriam Keogh in second and third.

Well done to all concerned especially our new members who didn’t delay in making their mark in the club.

How I Took that Shot – Trevor O’Connell

Trevor O'Connell - Beautiful Blur

ECCG member, Trevor O’Connell came first in Grade A in our recent ‘Beautiful Blur’ competition with the beautiful image above. This is how he did it:

This was an opportunistic shot,

I took the boys out for a walk in Rostellan woods one day and I brought my camera with my 150-600 mm lens along in the hope I might get a shot of a red squirrel (there are quite a few jumping around the treetops there).

BeautifulBlurSettingsAs we were navigating through a particularly narrow and muddy part of the woods we found ourselves enveloped by this long purple heather (I think), so I dropped back from the boys and set my focal length to 200mm and f/5.6 focused on Matthew and took the shot knowing that most of the flowers would be out of focus due to the long focal length and large aperture.

In post, (using Adobe Lightroom) I sucked some saturation out of the greens (I hate saturated greens) and brightened up and sharpened the centre.

It could probably do with being cropped in tighter to draw more attention to the boys as there is a lot of wasted space around the edge which is quite distracting.

Camera: Canon Eos 6d
Lens: Sigma 150-600c
Focal Length: 200
ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/50sec

Well done Trevor!

ECCG ‘Colour Burst’ Competition – 06/09/2016

Zane Llew

Tuesday 6th September 2016 was the night for ECCG’s penultimate internal competition before the annual Photographer of the Year competition in November. The ‘Colour Burst’ theme provoked some varying interpretations but when the scoring was completed and the points tallied, the places were allocated as follows:

Results

With only five points and seven points separating first, second and third places in Grade A, it was a very close battle between Gráinne Davies, John Tait and Anthony O’Connor all the way through the scoring process.

Grade B was a different scenario with Zane Llewellyn winning convincingly with a score of 577 points for the image above, from Jim O’Neill in second at 526 points and Denis O’Flynn in third at 506 points. Zane’s score was enough to give him the overall highest score across all Grades on the night.

Grade C was another close fought affair with Karina Leeson taking first place by a mere 2 points from Eileen Upton while Andrew Foley took third place a little further adrift.

Well done to everyone who participated in this competition.

‘Transport’ was the theme of our fourth and latest internal competition of 2016 held at the Midleton Park Hotel on Tuesday 07/06/16. Following two viewings of the eighteen entries, marks were awarded which yielded a close run result especially in Grade B where only one point separated first and second. The results were as follows:

Scores

Gaining his second first place in a row, Finbarr O’Shea took the honours in Grade A  while Anthony O’Connor and Denis Barry came second and third.

With two wins already under his belt for the year, Keith Johnson made it three by winning Grade B. Jim O’Neil was second and Noelle Lowney third.

Newcomer, Karina Leeson, made an outstanding debut in ECCG competition by winning Grade C with a score of 318 points which also landed her third in the overall placings. Well done Karina!. Eileen Upton and Jim Curtin came second and third respectively in Grade C.

In the overall high scores across all three Grades, Finbarr O’Shea, Anthony O’Connor and Karina Leeson took the honours.

Well done to all entrants, especially those new members entering for the first time, and congratulations to those who gained valuable points towards this year’s Photographer of the Year competition.
