Beginners’ Course – Day 1 – 2/3/14

Composition-2Day 1 of the beginners’ course was held on Sunday morning, 2/3/14 lead by Kevin Day and Denis Barry. An hour and a half’s classroom work (due to rain!) was followed by another hour and a half shooting by the Dungourney river and Council grounds.

As soon as the rain stopped, people took the chance to walk the dogs and get some exercise. West Highland White Terrier, Loki, was full of energy as he bounded about the park with his owner, Laura. He did manage to contain his excitement for a brief moment, however, when asked for a photo!

Fiona and Mary were also taking a breath of fresh air in the park and were particularly impressed by the ornate doorway of the Council building.

The park provided some great opportunities for photography. The river, stonework, old buildings and gnarled trees were turned into great images by the members.

Thanks to all who attended and to Laura, Fiona and Mary (and Loki of course!) for allowing us to photograph and publish their images.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Workshop

lightroom-workshopWith the recent run of poor weather, which has led to the cancellation of a number of shoots, it was decided a safer bet to remain indoors this weekend for our second workshop of the year.

And so we headed to the comfort of the Midleton Park Hotel where our chairman Denis Barry presented a 3 hour workshop covering the basics of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, the industry standard software for organising, enhancing and sharing images.

Eight ECCG members were treated to a walk through of the basics from file import including tethered shooting through to image enhancement, geotagging, creating a photo book, printing and producing a slideshow and web gallery.

Thanks to Denis for a very educational morning.

Shoot at Youghal on 26/1/14

ECCG shoot Youghal-8230With a Code Orange weather warning in place for most of the West and South of the country for Sunday 26/1/14, it was touch and go whether another ECCG shoot would succumb to the wintry weather conditions of 2014 so far. However, following early morning consultations with various weather forecasters it was felt that Youghal might have a chance of a reasonably good day so the shoot was ‘on’.

Seven members turned out at the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal in a windy but dry morning and with high tide due at 12.48pm and a 50kph wind blowing, the sea was already raging against the rocky shoreline – a sure draw for eager photographers.

Following the short walk to the lighthouse, we descended the many steps to the ‘diving rocks’ where it seemed someone had taken the time to construct ideal photography platforms for us and, with the tide surging only feet away, it was a photo-fest indeed.

Having worked our way around to the front strand by 1pm, we regrouped at the Old Imperial Hotel, North Main Street, for lunch which felt well overdue due to the appetite inducing, fresh sea air.

After this welcome break in proceedings it was back to the shoot with a visit to the nearby St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, a national monument of Ireland and which is the oldest church in continuous use since its foundation in Ireland and whose roof timbers have been carbon dated to the year 1170. The extensive graveyard is surrounded by the original town walls, complete with walkways and viewing points and they are thought to be the best preserved medieval town walls in Ireland.

Unfortunately, it was about this time when the weather took a turn for the worst and cut our visit short, but Youghal and the jewel that is St. Mary’s are certainly on the cards for a return visit.

Thanks to Michael Hegarty for his assistance in organising the shoot.

Cork – Resplendent in the Rain

Though buffeted by high winds and rain, Cork City presented with a charm all of its own on Sunday afternoon, 29/12/2013, as hardy shoppers scurried about the streets in the festive atmosphere.

Despite the testing conditions, people were in great humour all around the City lending credence to the City’s ‘friendly’ tag.20131229-DB2_7183ECCG reporters-120131229-DB2_7052

Though hardly ideal weather for photography, two members of ECCG threw caution to the winds and ISO settings to the heavens and headed out into the storm to record activities in the ‘Real Capital’.

While willing to risk life and limb to get the shot (well we did have a go on the Giant Wheel!), the gear had to be protected from the elements. The first defence was the incredibly cheap and effective OpTech Rain Sleeve, without which, we would not have been able to get out at all. These kept the bodies and lenses dry and after that it was a constant battle just to keep the front lens elements dry, an impossibility in the circumstances so it was really just a matter of getting on with it and hoping for the best.

ISO crept towards the 2000 mark at times in order to maintain some chance of a hand-hold-able shot. Both Nikon and Canon were represented but with conditions as they were, there was no lens changing. 18-55mm and 18-200mm were the lenses of choice and proved their versatility on the day. Umbrellas and tripods were brought along but were more of a hindrance than a help, such was the high wind and could really have been left in the car.

All in all, a challenging but enjoyable day of photography in our City by the Lee – and a few ‘keepers’ into the bargain.
