Street Photography – in your face!

Street photography is a genre all of it’s own and some of the greats like Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau made it their own. The biggest obstacle, it appears, is the fear that most people have of photographing strangers in public and the risk of confrontation. Well not for New York photographer, Bruce Gilden, who takes ‘up close and personal’ to new heights in his street photography. Even his website proclaims “I’m known for taking pictures very close, and the older I get, the closer I get”. Take a look at his unique style below:

Jay Maisel – Commercial Photographer

The ‘Thought for the Weekend’ last Friday was by Jay Maisel. In that he said, “I’m more interested in the picture quality than the pixel quality”, meaning that he’d prefer to increase his ISO than have a blurred image. Jay is a long time on the go and has some brilliant nuggets of advice just like the one above that stem from a lifetime in photography. Search for his name on this blog alone and you’ll get some more of his thoughts that we’ve published in the past.

Below is a short video featuring him in what appears to be an almost subliminal advertisement for a certain make of printer. Never mind that however, just soak in the innate photographic wisdom of this man.

Terry O’Neill’s exhibition at the Wandesford Quay Gallery, Cork

Legendary photographer, Terry O’Neill, brought a major exhibition of his work to the Wandesford Quay Gallery and Cork City Hall in Cork City earlier this year.

He was present, in person, at the opening on 24th January, which was thronged to capacity. It was a homecoming of sorts for the celebrated photographer who spent holidays in his childhood in Cork, the birthplace of his father.

His iconic portraits hung on the walls of the gallery included those of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Michael Caine, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Sean Connery, Lee Marvin, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Mohammed Ali, Brigitte Bardot, David Bowie, Raquel Welch, Catherine Deneuve, Naomi Campbell, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss and Bono. An absolute feast for the eyes.
