Sunrise at Pilmore – 10/01/2016

Sunrise Pilmore 10-01-16 F OShea-1

Following the last-minute cancellation of Lisgoold Point to Point due to the recent adverse weather, a sunrise shoot was hastily organised for 10th January at Pilmore beach near Youghal in east Cork.

With the recent monsoon season finally abated, the morning was crisp after a good overnight frost. We gathered at our destination shortly after 8am hoping for some decent sky colour around the 8.40am sunrise. High tide had been at around 5am and was running out fast which is not ideal around the multitude of timber groins that litter the beach and make for interesting features and leading lines.

Clouds filled the horizon as sunrise approached leaving just a hint of a warm glow as the sun struggled to peek through. With the tide well out, our time for shooting was over by 9.30am and, as the group photograph above was being taken, the sun finally burst through bathing the beach with a welcome warmth that immediately began to thaw the chill. A hot coffee afterwards in Youghal completed the thaw as we contemplated our next move against the conspiring elements.

1st Shoot of 2016 – Sunrise at Ballycotton

Sunrise 03-01-16 AOC-1

After a relatively inactive few weeks due to bad weather, our first shoot of 2016 took us to Ballycotton for sunrise on Sunday 3rd January. 5 members of the group braved the elements, leaving Midleton Park Hotel at 7:30am, and with a favourable weather forecast we hoped for some good colour in the sky.

With Garryvoe beach inaccessible due to flooding we headed to Ballinamona and set up 20 mins before sunrise. Unfortunately heavy cloud which moved in from the west, obscured the sunrise, so it was on to Ballycotton pier and adjacent beach where there is always a shot to be found.

Ballycotton Sunrise – 8/2/15

Finbarr OShea-4

Our weekend shoot took us to Ballycotton for sunrise on Sunday 8th Feb. 2015 and another installment in our Lighthouse’s project.

We set out from our meeting point at the Midleton Park Hotel at 6:45am and, having regrouped at Shanagarry, ten members in all headed for Ballycotton.

The forecast had looked promising and with high tide just passed, we arrived at Silver Strand at 7:25am for the 8am sunrise. However, as has happened all too often lately, heavy cloud lay over the horizon and it was clear we would not have the conditions we experienced at Church Bay two weeks previously.

After a brief discussion, some members opted to stay at Silver Strand while the remainder headed to the spot known locally as “The Men’s Bathing Place” on the cliff road, to get a closer view of the lighthouse.

Despite the disappointing sky there are always options at Ballycotton and a great morning was had by all.

This location will be worth a revisit later in the year. See the images below. Enjoy!

Crosshaven Shoot – 18/1/2015

Denis Barry-3

Following the disappointing ‘no-show’ of the sun in Youghal last week, we decided to pin our hopes on Crosshaven on 18/1. All the calculators showed the sun rising at approx 8.33am and we judged that if we were at a position north of Church Bay, it would rise just behind Roches Point lighthouse. The tide would be out but if we got a good sunrise, then the state of the tide would be a secondary consideration. Having the theory sorted, all we needed was for the elements to play ball.

With a hard frost overnight, the sky was clear in the early morning giving rise to great optimism for a successful shoot. We took up position around 8am and by 8.15am the glow began to appear in the sky. Right on schedule the sun broke the horizon and we were treated to the most spectacular sunrise – worthwhile to witness not to mind photograph.

Thereafter it was into Crosshaven for a welcome breakfast among the gulls and crows who proved adept at getting their slice of the action while a friendly robin at Camden fort spent over 20 minutes posing for photographs.

Ballycotton Sunrise Shoot – 13/4/14

Bill Sisk-4

The main party met at the Midleton Park Hotel at 5.30am and carpooled before proceeding to the pier at Ballycotton where we were joined by the remainder of the party at 6am.

The sun did not oblige on the day but we took a few shots around the lighthouse. As the light did not look like improving we called off the shoot at about 7.30am.
