How I Took That Shot – Noelle Lowney

Not content at winning Grade B in our recent ‘Vacation’ competition, Noelle Lowney also took first place across all Grades with the shot above taken in the National Park, Killarney. This is how she made the shot:

The image was taken in the grounds of Muckcross House, Killarney, Co. Kerry. The weather was not great that day with dull skies and rain. On my search for a vacation image walking through the wet grounds of Muckross, I decided that a jaunting car transporting tourists from around the globe would be an ideal vacation theme.

I poised myself by the side of a narrow road in the rain and took a few shots of the
jaunting cars transporting tourists ,mostly from the USA, around the Killarney lakes
and surrounding scenic countryside. While the passengers in the jaunting carriage
took in the sights and enjoyed the experience of a unique ride in an Irish traditional
mode of transport, the driver (Jarvey) regaled them with local history, stories of old
and Irish legends and folklore. After taking multiple shots I decided on this image as I thought it represented true vacation with the lady in the carriage taking a shot of Muckcross house to capture memories of a memorable trip to Ireland.

The shot was taken on a Canon EOS 7D Mark II – Camera settings TV (Shutter
Priority), F/3.5,ISO1250 and Shutter Speed 1/2000.

ECCG Shoots 2017 Competition – 06/06/2017

ECCG’s fourth internal competition of the year was for images taken during any of the Group’s shoots held during 2017. With no other theme to focus the entries, they were indeed varied as can be seen in the competition’s gallery.

While the best picture overall was the brilliant portrait above taken by Noelle Lowney at last weekend’s Innishannon Steam Rally, there were some great battles across the grades as the votes were counted.

When the final tally was recorded the spoils were divided as follows:

In Grade C, Paul Stack took first place with a winning margin of seven points from Miriam Keogh with Andrew Foley taking third.

Noelle Lowney had a very comfortable win in Grade B, a full 68 points ahead of Jim O’Neill in second place while Keith Johnson took the third spot.

Grade A saw the tightest of margins with Denis Barry holding onto a one point lead from Michael Hickey to win the Grade while Kevin Day was only another eight points adrift in third.

In the overall scores, Noelle Lowney had a thirty point cushion in first place with Paul Stack and Miriam Keogh taking second and third places respectively.

Well done to all twenty entrants.

Ballyvodock Point to Point – 29/01/2017

Ballyvodock p2p 05-02-17 NLowney-8

On a cold, wet, miserable Sunday afternoon, the p2p bandwagon rolled on to the course located at Ballyvodock, Carrigtwohill for the Pigeon Hill and Carrigtwohill point to point. This race meeting, now in its third year at this location, is organised by the United Hunt and is considered to be one of premier meetings on the southern circuit and was the last ECCG shoot of January 2017.

The course is a left handed track with 6 races being run on the day covering a two and half circuits over 9 furlongs distance per race in an anti clockwise direction with a slight up hill finish. Despite the bad weather, the event was well supported and attracted a huge crowd from the local area to attend this event.

Despite being a cold and very wet day, the unfavourable weather conditions did not deter a few brave ECCG members to attend the event and we were treated to some great action. The exciting race performances warmed up punters and non punters alike.  Some great equine sporting images were captured from the parade ring and track on the day from all angles to say the least with some members braving taking shots from the ground level despite the mucky conditions.

See a gallery of images from this shoot here. Enjoy!

How I Took that Shot – Noelle Lowney

Noelle Lowney came first in Grade B in our recent ‘Beautiful Blur’ competition with the shot above. This is how she made the image:

The shot was taken at the Cahermore Pier in West Cork whilst visiting the Beara Peninsula. It is a little pier located  5 miles outside Castletownbere on the main road to Allihies. It was a windy, blustery day and the tide was fully in. The camera was mounted on a tripod and using a ND Filter I took a number of shots using different shutter speeds to try and capture the motion of the waves as they thrashed the pier hard. It was a challenge to get the image not to mention trying to keep the tripod still and holding onto the camera for dear life

The image was taken with a Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Camera settings – F/16, Exposure 24 secs ISO 100. Focal Length 24mm.

Well done Noelle!
