National Geographic – The Photography Issue

National Geographic magazine marks its 125th anniversary with a special October issue devoted to celebrating the power of photography. Photographers use their cameras as tools of exploration, passports to inner sanctums, instruments for change. Their images are proof that photography matters—now more than ever. The issue looks at how photography has the power to impact our lives by bearing witness, helping to prove fact, giving us insight into each other, revealing unknown places, celebrating wonder and inspiring us to protect our natural world.

To complement the release of the issue, National Geographic has also unveiled a new photo blog, “Proof

Getting a Different Perspective – Joe McNally

Internationally acclaimed photographer, Joe McNally’s career has spanned over 30 years. In that time he has shot for all the big publications including National Geographic, Life and Sports Illustrated.

In the weeks following 9/11, he created a project titled ‘Faces of Ground Zero’ using the world’s only giant, eight feet wide and twelve feet long, Polaroid camera to produce life-sized (9’x4′) portraits of a cross section of first responders, survivors and relatives of victims, which were subsequently exhibited and published in a book to raise funds for the relief effort. This is an excellent publication and, at the time of writing, is still available online. The video below gives an indication of how this project was put together.

A master of light, Joe has a knack for going the extra mile to get a different perspective in his images. To see what I mean and get a flavour of the man and the photographer, take a look at the following videos:

If you ever get the chance to attend one of Joe’s workshops, grab it with both hands; his enthusiasm and humorous style alone will make it worth the admission.
