With more than just a nod to the adventures of Joe McNally and his penchant for getting his camera into unusual (very high) places, TIME magazine’s, Jonathan Woods, decided to make a Gigapan image of New York from the top of No.1 World Trade Center. Here’s how they did it:
Internationally acclaimed photographer, Joe McNally’s career has spanned over 30 years. In that time he has shot for all the big publications including National Geographic, Life and Sports Illustrated.
In the weeks following 9/11, he created a project titled ‘Faces of Ground Zero’ using the world’s only giant, eight feet wide and twelve feet long, Polaroid camera to produce life-sized (9’x4′) portraits of a cross section of first responders, survivors and relatives of victims, which were subsequently exhibited and published in a book to raise funds for the relief effort. This is an excellent publication and, at the time of writing, is still available online. The video below gives an indication of how this project was put together.
A master of light, Joe has a knack for going the extra mile to get a different perspective in his images. To see what I mean and get a flavour of the man and the photographer, take a look at the following videos:

If you ever get the chance to attend one of Joe’s workshops, grab it with both hands; his enthusiasm and humorous style alone will make it worth the admission.
