ECCG ‘Festive’ Competition – 06/02/2018

Coming so quickly after Christmas, hopes were high that the ‘Festive’ theme would entice a good entry to our first internal competition of 2018 and we were not disappointed as twenty-nine entries were received. The image above by John Tait was the overall highest scoring image on the night and took first place in Grade A.

These were the 1, 2, 3s in each Grade:

Grade C saw Neil O’Carroll on the winner’s podium for the first time with Ray O’Connell and Paul Stack in second and third respectively.

Noelle Lowney won Grade B by a comfortable 29 point margin from Keith Johnson in second followed by Denis O’Flynn in third.

Grade A was the real battleground in this competition with different competitors occupying the first, second and third berths at different times as the votes were recorded. In the end, though it was John Tait who took the top spot from Fidelma Read by a winning margin of only eleven points with Eileen Upton coming home in a very credible third place in her first outing in the Grade. The Grade A placings were replicated in the Overall first, second and third spots.

Well done to all our winners and everyone who entered, especially to those entering for the first time.

Lisgoold Point to Point – 5/1/14

While the ECCG shoot at Lisgoold Point to Point on Sunday 5/1/14 was cancelled due to the atrocious weather conditions, one member of the group wasn’t as easily deterred.

Denis O’Flynn, never one to let a sporting occasion pass without aiming his cameras at it, braved the elements and came away with some images. Check them out below:

While most amateur photographers might hazard a guess at the gear and settings required for shooting sport, what are less widely known or understood are the actual logistics of getting prepared, getting into the ground, getting organised, where to position yourself and what and when to shoot. ECCG member, Denis O’Flynn is a very experienced sports photographer who regularly shoots GAA matches at club and inter-county level for the web and print media.

Having recently shot both All Ireland Senior Hurling Final games, Denis shares his experience and workflow which he has developed over many years.

At a well attended meeting of the ECCG on Tuesday 10/4/13, Tom Tattan, Dave Edmunds and John Horgan delivered a workshop on portrait flash photography using speedlights. As flash photography can be a mysterious practice for the uninitiated, this was a very much sought after event and went down well with all in attendance.

Our secretary, Karen Fleming, introduced some glamour to the occasion by (foolishly?) agreeing to model for the battery of paparazzi who all wanted to test their newly learned skills. Scenes reminiscent of the outside of a celebrity nightclub at 4am ensued as strobes popped continuously. In hindsight a pair of dark glasses would have been in order for our patient model, whose retinas must have been screaming STOPPPP as the barrage showed no sign of abating! Well done to all concerned.

ECCG's online magazine 'Snapshot'PRO, Denis Barry revealed the ECCG’s new online magazine, ‘Snapshot‘ which is available on iOS and Android devices to members and non-members alike here.

Unfortunately these are the only ways in which the magazine can be accessed, a matter which is completely out of our hands but, that said, it is a wonderful experience on a tablet device especially as there are beautiful photos and videos within the pages that really exploit the tablets’ size and capabilities. The display on other devices, such as mobile phones and iPods, etc, while smaller, is also a very rewarding experience.

The magazine will feature articles of photographic interest from varying online sources and will be updated frequently so be sure to check it out often and let us know what you think.
