How I Took that Shot – Joe Keniry

19 Joe Keniry - Weather

Not only did Joe Keniry take first place in Grade B in our ‘Weather’ competition held on 7/2/17, his image was the highest scoring image across all grades, a fantastic feat. This is how he made it:

This photo was taken on the 26th October 2015 at Youghal front strand.

It was a very stormy day and high tides were predicted. As I wasn’t that busy, I took the afternoon off and went to Youghal. There was a gathering of about 20 people viewing the large waves crashing over the wall. I was taking a few shots from a distance when I noticed a young boy dodging the sea spray. I felt there was a shot there so I stayed with him and then, luckily for me but not for him, he got caught under a huge wave breaking over the wall. So I thank him for that perfect shot on that not so perfect day!

I used my Nikon D7000, 50 mm lens, 1/250 sec, F/9, ISO  400.

Well done Joe!

ECCG ‘Weather’ Competition – 07/02/2017

19 Joe Keniry - Weather

After the Christmas break it was great to get back into competition mode again. With twenty-five entries and thirty-one voters in house at the Midleton Park Hotel on Tuesday 7/2/17, there was a buzz about the room as the first internal competition of the year was about to kick off.

The theme was ‘Weather’ and, living in Ireland, there should be no problem getting shots for that competition surely? The strong entry was an affirmative answer to that question, and as the entries were projected, the voting got under way.

An hour later, the number crunching got under way and it was apparent immediately that there would be several close contests within the Grades. This is how the final numbers fell:

scores

Grade A saw current Photographer of the Year, Zane Llewellyn take first place while Kevin Day and Mervyn Daly took second and third.

Joe Keniry took top spot in Grade B with the image above which was also the highest scoring image across all Grades with 677points. He was followed in Grade B by Keith Johnson and new member Remigiusz Boron.

Grade C saw another new member, Sonja Eisenberg, take first place with Andrew Foley and Miriam Keogh in second and third.

Well done to all concerned especially our new members who didn’t delay in making their mark in the club.

Pilmore Sunrise Shoot – 12/02/2017

On 12th February, 8 members of our group headed for Pilmore, Youghal in East Cork, for a sunrise shoot.

6:40am was our meeting time at the Midleton Park Hotel, and from there we headed for Youghal. With high tide having just passed, there was plenty of wave action around the many groynes along the beach.

Sunrise was at 7:55am and unfortunately the sky remained grey throughout. However, there were plenty of interesting shots to be had, and a good introduction to seascape photography for some of our new members who turned out on the day.

Check out a gallery of member’s images from the shoot here.

Tallow/West Waterford Point to Point – 05/02/2017

On a bright sunny Sunday afternoon, the P2P bandwagon rolled on to the course located at Shanakill, Conna outside Tallow town for the annual Tallow P2P.

The course is a left handed galloping track with the start located at the entrance of the home straight with race runners passing the winning post 4 times. 6 races were run on the day and the event was well supported and attracted a huge crowd from the local area and beyond.

Blessed with favourable weather conditions, ECCG members who attended the event were treated to some great action. The exciting races thrilled punters and non punters alike and we got some great images, from the parade ring to the winning post at various angles including some from ground level that made for unusual and challenging images.

Ballybrannigan Sunrise Shoot – 05/02/2017

Our 5th shoot of the year took ECCG members to Ballybrannigan beach in East Cork for sunrise on 5th of February.

From our meeting point at the Midleton Park Hotel, we headed for Ballybrannigan beach at 7am and in total 8 of our group turned out. With the sun rising over the sea through hazy low lying cloud, combined with plenty of surf, conditions were ideal.

There is lots of scope at this location from sandy beach to rocky foreground.

Check out our gallery of images from the shoot. Enjoy!
