Sunrise Shoot – Ballytrasna – 07/02/2016

SR Ballytrasna 07-02-16 JTait-6

With sunrise creeping ever closer to 8am, it was an early rise to make the 7am meeting time at Ballycotton. Traversing the cliff walk to Ballytrasna in practically pitch darkness was a new experience but all got there in one piece to find the tide, that was supposed to be well out, crashing around the rocks and leaving little or no dry land. The approaching storm Imogen was probably behind the raging surf which sent rogue waves towards us at regular intervals filling several pairs of boots in the process!

This spot is very rocky with no sand to speak of and so, was a very different scene to what we’d photographed so far this year. The forecast was again spot on giving reasonably clear skies at sunrise with some light cloud that lit up as the sun rose behind it.

The shoot was a success in many ways, not least in the exercise and fresh air we received as a bonus to the actual photographic content. By 9am the good light was well gone so we called time on our eight shoot of the year and headed home to examine the files.

Sunrise Shoot at Ballycotton – 30/01/2016

Ballycotton SR2 FOS-2

Pushing the club’s ‘Seascape’ theme for January to the limit, we turned out for our fifth sunrise/seascape shoot of the month, on Saturday 30th, at Ballycotton in East Cork, a veritable treasure trove of photographic opportunities and a regular stomping ground for ECCG. With the sunrise due at 8.22am and high tide in just under an hour later we approached the fishing village with great hope as the clear skies appeared to be in keeping with the good forecast.

The beach at the pier faces in an easterly direction which, at dawn, renders the islands and lighthouse in silhouette as the sun rises beyond them. The good swell invited getting in close to and onto the rocks to capture the running streams and breaking waves as the tide filled around them.

With a low band of cloud obscuring the horizon, it took ten minutes or so for the sun to break into clear skies making shooting conditions difficult with the increasing brightness. Nevertheless, Ballycotton yielded yet another fruitful morning and, as the sleepy village began to stir awake, we made our way home happy with our morning’s work.

Sunrise at Front Strand, Youghal – 23/01/2016

Sunrise YLFS FOS-4

With weather forecasts giving hope of a clear window in the midst of seemingly endless overcast and wet conditions, we struck for the front strand in Youghal on Saturday morning, 23/1/16, in search of the sunrise which was due at 8.25am.

With the tide running out fast, the sky in the east was indeed reasonably clear and yielded some great colour as sunrise approached. The groins played their part as usual providing the classic leading lines while the surf and rocks added to the scene.

The post mortem, over a welcome hot coffee, revealed a successful shoot with the hope that what appeared promising on the backs of the cameras would transfer intact to the bigger screens later in the morning.

Sunrise at Ballycroneen – 16/01/2016

Sunrise Ballycroneen 160116DBarry-5

While sunrise continues to hover around the ‘sensible’ time of 8.30am, we headed to Ballycroneen in the hope of catching some colour on Saturday 16/1/16.

Thankfully the -5ºC forecast missed the East Cork area and we were able to travel in safety to our destination before setting up at around 8am as the tide filled around the beach and rocks.

Cloud was thick on the horizon which prevented a dazzling sunrise but, nevertheless, some colour and shafts of light appeared for the briefest of moments which yielded some decent photographs and sent us off reasonably happy with our early morning shoot.

Sunrise at Pilmore – 10/01/2016

Sunrise Pilmore 10-01-16 F OShea-1

Following the last-minute cancellation of Lisgoold Point to Point due to the recent adverse weather, a sunrise shoot was hastily organised for 10th January at Pilmore beach near Youghal in east Cork.

With the recent monsoon season finally abated, the morning was crisp after a good overnight frost. We gathered at our destination shortly after 8am hoping for some decent sky colour around the 8.40am sunrise. High tide had been at around 5am and was running out fast which is not ideal around the multitude of timber groins that litter the beach and make for interesting features and leading lines.

Clouds filled the horizon as sunrise approached leaving just a hint of a warm glow as the sun struggled to peek through. With the tide well out, our time for shooting was over by 9.30am and, as the group photograph above was being taken, the sun finally burst through bathing the beach with a welcome warmth that immediately began to thaw the chill. A hot coffee afterwards in Youghal completed the thaw as we contemplated our next move against the conspiring elements.
