A Black & White Night – 02/02/2016

B&W-1

Eric Dunne-Magner at ECCG

Continuing with our scheme of theming the calendar months on a particular photography genre, we designated February to be our Black and White month and to get it off to a flying start, we invited two experts in the genre, Eric Dunne-Magner AIPF and Mark McGranaghan AIPF, of Cork Camera Group, to our Tuesday night meeting on 2/2/16 at The Midleton Park Hotel

B&W-5

Mark McGranaghan at ECCG

Showing a wide variety of shots from portraiture, travel, architecture and purely creative studio work, both men explained their workflows in detail while displaying their skills with Lightroom, Photoshop, Photomatix, HDR and associated plugins such as Nik Silver Effects Pro.

The talk certainly set the tempo for the month ahead which will be a challenge to those of us who find the genre daunting  and will certainly get most of us out of our comfort zone. No more a matter of simply hitting the ‘B&W’ button in Lightroom or its equivalent in other programs, we will now have to delve a little deeper and see what other tools and plugins can do for us to bring out the best in the images. A few intense processing sessions ahead, methinks!

Thanks to Eric and Mark for coming to our club and sharing their knowledge with us.

John Finn ARPS

johnfinnWe are delighted to hear that local  photographer, John Finn, a member of the neighbouring Cork Camera Group, was yesterday awarded an Associateship Distinction (ARPS) from the Royal Photographic Society in Birmingham, UK.

The panel John submitted consisted of 15 inverted reflections of Cork City. His statement of intent that accompanied the panel said, “I want to show in these inverted reflections how a river is like a multi-faceted artist, by turns – realist, impressionist and modernist, taking the mundane aspects of the city, its buildings, trees and bridges and transforming them into a variety of shimmering, evanescent images.”

Well done John – well deserved.

See the panel here.

Cork Camera Group Exhibitions

Our friends in neighbouring Cork Camera Group are really busy at the moment. Not only is their annual exhibition currently running but they also host the exhibition of the 1st Cork International Salon of Photography on Saturday next, 8/2/14.

Cork Camera Group Exhibition 2014

Cork Camera Group Exhibition 2014

Their annual exhibition opened on Tuesday 4/2/14 at the Cork Vision Centre, North Main St., Cork and will be open to the public to the 21st February. Opening times are Tuesday – Saturday: 10am – 5pm and admission is free. Around 75 images are on display and, as the press release says, they “present a veritable cornucopia of portraits, land and seascapes, wildlife and travel images” with some macro, nude and abstract also in the mix.

Suitably surrounding an extensive model of Cork City, the exhibition is magnificent and inspiring. Make sure you put it on your calendar. Details here.
