Cork County Finals – 22/10/2017

A historic GAA day in Cork: two senior County finals, football and hurling and also the Official Opening of Pairc Uí Chaoimh.

Carrig Dubh V Ui Mac Coille.

For the first time since 1998 the East Cork Divisional team, Imokilly,  won the Sean Óg Murphy Cup.  The team was captained by Seamie Harnedy from the St. Itas club.  It is the third win for Imokilly who won in 1997 and 1998 also.  The Final score was Imokilly 3-13  -  Blackrock 0-18.  The goals for Imokilly were scored by Seamie Harnedy,  Cian Fleming from Aghada and Brian Mulcahy from St. Catherine`s. There were 16,000 at the game at this stage "probably" all from East Cork.

The football game was won by Nemo Rangers who beat St. Finbarr's by the score 4-12 to 3-13.

How I Took That Shot – Jim Curtin

Jim Curtin took first place in Grade C in our recent 'Selfie' competition with the image above. This is how he made the shot:

Selfies - what are they?. There were 14 opinions entered in this competition. My one started with a U-Tube show on another competition night when prompted  to do a lookalike of Robert Osborne fine art Photographer. So I grew the beard, got the shirt, had the cap and added the pipe. I set up the corner in the bedroom with a black backdrop and my camera on a tripod.  After an amount of trial and error I had several shots that were workable. The lighting was a side view of natural light with the blind pulled down to kill the light a bit. The use of Lightroom was vital to use the Dark and Shadow sliders.

Camera settings:  Canon 100D with kit lens (18-55) ,1/6 sec., f4.0, ISO 100. I worked the camera remotely with the switch in my hand. No flash used.

Well done Jim.

Culture Night, Cork – 22/09/2017

This the 2nd of 2 days open invites where Cork people and visitors can view the insides of buildings, this time for cultural purposes. This night started in Dublin's Temple Bar about 10 years ago and has spread throughout the country since. Many large buildings were used to display Art, Music, Films and Dance and a great night was had.

Walking from the northside, I stopped in St. Lukes where there was an interesting Art exhibition entitled, "Fantasy of the Good Life". Then I met up with fellow club member, Keith Johnston and went to the "Port of Cork" building, where the trade skills of Cork builders were visible and complimented by Traditional Music played by young musicians. The building was full of history with model boats in glass cases and mementos of visiting ships on display in the reception area. In the boardroom were paintings, prints and a outstanding City Coat of Arms on display.

On to The City Hall which had several areas of activity. including films with a Cork theme. Next, in the Millennium Hall was a youth orchestra from "Music Generation from Cork City" and Barrack Street. In the new building there were male voice groups performing. We watched the "The Polyphonics Cork"  which were very entertaining.

With the 9pm train looming we worked our way back photographing buildings and bridges dressed in coloured lights for the occasion.

Cork Heritage Open Day – 19/08/2017

The Freemasons' Hall, 25-27 Tuckey Street, Cork

Cork Heritage Open Day, the now yearly opportunity to view historic buildings in Cork, is a welcome invitation to see rooms, offices and workplaces that are not usually open to the public. The buildings are usually within walking distance from the city centre and there were 41 on view this year. All the famous ones were on view from churches, schools, galleries and working areas. Even banks with no money opened their doors! It was not possible to view all buildings open but to follow your own interests. Having visited three sites, the welcomes were warm and the Q and A were interesting.

Jim Curtin - Beautiful Blur

In our recent 'Beautiful Blur' competition, Jim Curtin won Grade C and took the overall highest scoring image across all Grades with the image above. This is how he made it:

While shaking the morning dew from a rose bush I cracked the stem by mistake. I then stood it in a glass and photographed it from overhead. In the post-processing in "Cyberlink Photo Director 7", I disguised the worktop with a circular blur in the photo effects and edit mode. Camera: Canon 100D, 50mm lens, 1 Sec, f22, ISO 3200.

Well done Jim!
